The fingernail profiler is for generating that tricky profile on pointed spindle and bowl gouges from 1/4 " up to 3/4".

Shown below is a close up of a half inch spindle gouge in the pivoting clamp. You can see the calibration marks on the joint. There are various adjustments you can make to vary the resulting profile of the grind. So different styles of ground-back bowl gouges can be generated for example. If you remember the numbers on the calibration marks you can get back to the previous grind accurately.
The base of the jig needs to be screwed down to a baseboard or bench five inches below the centre height of the grinder for good results.
